Genre-based writing teaches through the conventions of particular genres, and free writing involves unstructured, spontaneous writing without a model to imitate. So, using a model to imitate aligns with the product approach, which concentrates on the end product and how closely it mirrors an exemplar. For example, a student might study a model descriptive paragraph and imitate its lead, detail choices, and concluding sentence to craft a similar description.
